Walls

You chased me down the caverns,
Beneath my skin, my breath, my eyes,
Till I was lost in the darkness of a primitive
Light dancing on the walls
In strange streaks of amber and gold
Playing out the ancient drama,
The fight for sacred breath that
Fills and collapses my lungs in an
Endless terminal cycle of death and rebirth.

We wrestle on the rough, icy stone
With bodies straining in the silent whisper
Of the flames that flicker against
These encroaching walls.
I feign hear the distant beat of the drums
Ignoring the rhythm that lies in the beat
Of my own heart.
Drenched in sweat, I gulp down
The stale cave air as your image blurs.

It has always been this way.

Hidden within the confines of my
Ancient cerebral soul
We beat against these unforgiving walls.
Walls hewn from the earth,
Walls stacked in stone,
Walls suffocating, never killing.

Finally, falling, not surrendering,
I faint on the floor in exhaustion.

Hours pass before sunlight bares
Our naked bodies to the day.
Silently I dress and walk out
Into the world, already known.
